120 hp L Drive Duel Exhaust Lower Unit Disassembly
10/06/09 at 14:48:55

Hello,
I am having a problem with my L drive lower unit.  The retainer pin that holds the shift linkage in place apparently removed itself in the water last weekend causing the shifter to stay in forward.  Needless to say docking was not easy.  I ordered another one and after trying to reinstall the retaining pin I believe that I have to disassemble the entire lower unit to reinstall.  Has this ever happened to anyone?

Next question, I am trying to remove the retaining ring from the propeller shaft using the required spanner wrench but it isn't budging with a 350 ft lb impact gun.  Should this come loose pretty easily or am i doing something wrong?  I did bend the tab down per the manual.  I plan to soak it with buster when i get home.  Why is everything on this boat feel like its welded together!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as always.

Thank you,
Matt

Before you continue taking the bearing carrier out...and yes soaking it is a good idea.

With the case off, you should be able to align the shifter pin and the cradle in the case...patience and it will go back together.

I have had to do it many times.

TMD, I still cant get the retainer ring off.  I tried heating the aluminum housing, and soaking it in buster.  Do you think I should try to hit it with a 500 ft/lb impact gun? Any other tricks?

Is taking the carrier out necessary?

Thank you

Options....break the carrier or case.
or
Attempt to align the shifter pin without removing the carrier

I dont like my options!!!  Going to try to hit it with 500 ft lbs.  After that, I plan to try to cut the ring with a dremel and a carbide cutting bit.
