Hopefully this video gives you enough confidence to tackle your own gear case removal jobs.

The basic demonstration is on a Merc...but most gear cases come off the same way.

Through reading the service manual I have there are times you will have to disconnect the shift rod link, as TMD noted after you separate the lower unit, this is done for my 15hp Evinrude.  There is a link that is visible after you separate it about 6 inches or so.  Undo the bolt and presto it should come out.
