Starting after a prolonged period

This question comes up quite often so I thought I would add it to the FAQ section.

Drain fuel tanks and fuel system refill with new fuel and the proper oil mixture if not oil injected
Remove the carbs and clean them.
Remove the gearcase and check the water pump, replace as needed.
Squirt 2 stroke oil in the cyls and into the carb throat.
Turn the engine over by hand or use the starter.
Check and change the gear oil if needed.

Start the engine and let it run at idle for a while.

When you say to remove the carbs and clean them, I assume you mean rebuild or is there another less intensive procedure you have in mind?  Thanks!

Any additional advice or steps for a boat that hasn't been turned on in about 15 years? The boat was just given to me by a friend. It ran when it wa last used but that was back in 1994. The boat is a 17' marlin with an inboard omc120 in it (4 cyl.).

Also any suggestions/links on good ways to flush the fuel and oil would be awesome!

Thanks!

You should be able to tap into the fuel line that feeds the engine to get the fuel out....use a primer bulb and extended line.

Engine oil can either be dropped out or sucked out.
